Scope and Contents Notebook belonging to Alexander Carmichael containing field and transcribed material. The notebook is inscribed on the front inside cover with the following: 'Scrap Book MS No1 Alex[ander] Carmichael (of Lismore) Inland Revenue Lochmaddy N[orth] Uist] 1864'. On the recto side of the fly leaf is written 'Angus MacDonald Staoinebrig tale teller' and on the verso side of the fly leaf is written 'Bought at Drew's Saint columb Cornwall this 17 day of Nov[ember] 1864 A. A. Carmichael p2/3'....

Scope and Contents Notes and stories on Clan MacLeod of Lewis ['Clann 'ic Leòid 'ic Thorcuil'] collected from Aonas Mac Aulay [Angus MacAulay], aged 82, Croc na h-Aoi, [An Cnoc/Knock, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis]. MacAulay describes how 16 or 18 members of the clan are buried 'under the stone at Aoi' [Eaglais na h-Aoidhe] having been killed by Iain Garbh in Iain Wylie's house in Stornoway [Steòrnabhagh]. Part of a story entitled 'Fionladh Choinnachain' which starts on folio 9v collected from Donull Mac Cuieag [Donald MacCaig], Fearan an lea, who learnt it more that twenty years before from Donull Mac a Phee [Donald MacPhee], Talamsgeir [Fearann an Leagha/Fernilea and Talaisgeir/Talisker, An t-Eilean Sgitheanach/Isle of Skye]. The fragment tells how a woman finds her foster-sons and a nobleman leaves all his possessions to his daughter and Fionladh mac na ban-traich.

Scope and Contents Story about Lord Macdonald's heir and the MacLeans of Bororay [Boraraigh/Boreray] that the MacLeans looked after the heir from when he was born until he was seven years old, when he was returned home 'with a fold of cattle 12 milk cows and a bull' for which MacLean of Boreray got a new lease 'of 3 nineteen y[ea]rs'. The story tells how MacDonald reminded MacLean that he had to find a fold of cattle, MacLean reminded him that he had nineteen years of a lease to run, whereupon MacDonald cursed...

Story telling how Mrs MacDonald of Taransay's great grandfather died leaving one son. The child's mother being ill and unsure if she would put him into the care of Mr Auladh [Rev Aulay MacAulay] leaving him 'mile marag (mark)' for the son's education. MacAulay sent him to Stornoway [Steòrnabhagh/Stornoway, Eilean Leòdhais/Isle of Lewis] for three years and then taught him Latin himself, thus faithfully carrying out his duties.
